Most onboarding advice optimizes for time-to-value, and for simple tools that’s the right instinct. But for products that manage something consequential — money, health data, a small business’s finances — rushing a new user past the setup steps often produces confident-but-wrong configurations that surface as support tickets weeks later.
Designing for Confidence, Not Just Speed
On a recent finance product, we added two extra onboarding screens that did nothing but confirm the user’s understanding of what they’d just set up. Completion time went up. Support tickets in the first week dropped by a third. Slower isn’t the enemy of good design — misplaced confidence is.
